I SLIPPED INSIDE LORENZO’S dorm without knocking and slammed the door, planting my back against its surface while I caught my breath. Lorenzo startled, jumping up from his desk and whipping around like he was ready to attack the intruder with his pencil. He was a big guy to move that fast, and it made me snort.

Once he saw it was just me, his shoulders fell as he dropped back onto his flimsy desk chair, making it groan and protest his weight. Then he leaned back and crossed his hands over his belly with a raised brow. “What are you doing?”

“You need to hide me.”

“From?”

I flopped onto his bed and pushed a few textbooks out of the way so I could lie down. “Jacob. He’s driving me crazy.”

Lorenzo’s gaze darkened as he spun back around on his chair to face his computer. “What’s up now?”

Jacob and I had been dating for two months, and in that time, Lorenzo had changed his mind about his feelings toward the guy. Jacob, it turned out, was a bit . . . controlling. He liked to dictate everything about our relationship, and it made Lorenzo nuts. Not to mention the demeaning remarks that slipped out of Jacob’s mouth with more frequency. The ones I’d learned to grit my teeth through and ignore.

“He wants me to stay on campus with him this summer. I told him I’m better off going home to work and earn some money because Walmart would hire me back without flinching.”

“And he made that face at you, didn’t he?”

I knew the face Lorenzo was referring to. Jacob had a way of looking down at me. It reeked of condescension like my financial situation or life choices were hideously shameful and embarrassing.

“Yes, but that’s not the point. I told him I’d think about it. Maybe I can find a job here, but he won’t let up and wants an answer like yesterday. Daddy dearest needs to know where to house his prodigy son, you see. I swear, self-entitled rich kids are going to be the death of me. They have no clue about the real world.”

Lorenzo threw a tissue box at my head, jarring me from my rant. I barely got my arms up in time to save it from beaning me off the forehead.

“The fuck? Why are you throwing shit at me?”

“Because that statement was unfair, and you know it.”

I put the tissue box back on his desk and buried my face in my hands. We never talked about Gavin anymore, but my statement hit a nerve. Lorenzo was right. Gavin may have grown up with wealth and had most things handed to him, but he wasn’t self-absorbed. He was the humblest person I’d known in high school. He’d worked hard on his schooling and at his father’s clinic. He never put people down for what they didn’t have. He was the first one to offer a helping hand, and if anyone knew about the real world, it was Gavin who was in Afghanistan somewhere, fighting for his country.
